Aubrie Fisher, a junior at Wartburg College in Iowa and reigning NCAA Division 3 champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and indoor distance medley relay, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing in the 1,500, 5,000 and steeplechase May 12-14 at the American Rivers Conference Championships in Dubuque, along with racing May 25-28 in the 5,000 and steeplechase at the Division 3 finals at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. Fisher revisits running a personal-best 2:16.80 in the 800 meters in her May 4 dual meet against Luther, along with reflecting on clocking 10:21.64 in the steeplechase April 28 at the 112th Drake Relays to elevate to the No. 14 competitor in division history. She speaks about how significant it has been for all the Wartburg student-athletes to have all three national championships this year after racing at the 2019 Division 3 cross country final and then waiting to compete until the 2021 outdoor championship meet because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Fisher reminisces about running a 67-second final lap last year at the Division 3 final to rally past Melissa Rowland of Tufts and secure the first steeplechase championship in program history by a 10:30.46 to 10:31.82 margin. She also speaks about clocking 4:52.28 on the 1,600-meter anchor leg to help Wartburg hold off Loras by an 11:41.85 to 11:42.35 margin March 11, teaming with Ellie Meyer, Taylan Olson and Carson McSorley to secure the DMR title for the first time since 2005 and the third occasion in program history at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. Fisher also analyzes how significant her sixth-place performance at the Division 3 cross country national final in Louisville, Kent., by clocking 21 minutes on the 6-kilometer at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park was in building her confidence for the rest of the year. She explains how meaningful the collaboration has been with coach Ryan Chapman, and how profound it has been to have the opportunities to measure herself against student-athletes from higher divisions after competing for Class 1A program Ackley-Geneva-Wellsburg-Steamboat-Rock in Iowa and not racing at Drake Relays until college. Fisher shares her excitement for the potential steeplechase showdown with Evie Miller from Trine, No. 2 all-time in Division 3 at 10:06.26, at the NCAA final in Ohio, along with Wartburg's ambition to make the women's team podium after placing sixth at the indoor championship meet, with the Knights also looking to compete for another men's national title after winning last year. She also evaluates her high school basketball career in Iowa as well.
